Tommy Coulet was 30, slim, and achingly handsome. His deep blue eyes drew double takes. No one knew his secret, however. Not even his father, who remains haunted, all these years later, by what came next.

Tommy left his house at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, 1995 would never return. His body was discovered the next morning, Sunday, in a valley on the outskirts of Ridgewood — not far from the rattle and clank of Interstate 80.

What no one knew at the time was that Tommy had become the first victim of the most prolific serial killer in American history.
